Neighborhood Engagement Learning Lab (NELL)

This 18-month literacy focused grant from CFWM allowed Home City to initiate multiple literacy infused programs that are ongoing (see current programs). We were able to train staff and gain traction on integrate literacy and STEAM learning into our after school  and youth leadership programs, in partnership with Enchanted Circle and UMass Extension 4H, among many others. The Liberty Hill Mural Project, a community engaged art endeavor for all ages, was a central piece of this work.

Bay Area Maker Space

This program funded by the Beveridge Family Foundation enabled us to bring Holyoke Codes programs to the 437 Bay St Resident Resource Center, purchase computers and other hands on educational technology to work with teens introducing them to computer programming of simple games and robots. It also allowed us to expand our relationship with UMass Extension and UMass Engineering including programs that brought UMass Engineering and Computer Science students to campus, and UMass campus visits for Springfield youth.

Holyoke Codes Programs

Funded by the Beveridge Foundation, Holyoke Codes taught 20 classes to almost 40 low income minority teens, providing them with hands on experiences with computer coding and developing career awareness in the IT field. Participants developed new skills and increased their confidence, awareness, and curiosity for coding and robots. Equipment purchased and skills learned continue to inform our programs and expand our students' horizons.
