SPRINGFIELD — Home City Development, Inc. (HCDI) officially launched its newest Resident Tech Center on June 5, 2025, at the Chestnut Supportive Housing property, located at 275 Chestnut Street. The event, titled Tech Center Lunch and Learn, marked the expansion of HCDI’s digital literacy program to this location, providing residents with free technology training and access to modern tech resources.
The program, made possible through a City of Springfield ARPA grant and in partnership with Tech Foundry, aims to equip residents with digital skills essential for education, work, and everyday life. The Chestnut Supportive Housing property, which offers 29 affordable studio residences—including units for chronically homeless individuals and residents supported by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health—now features a fully equipped tech center for residents.
Thomas P. Kegelman, HCDI CEO, said, “We recognize the need for technical sophistication among our residents. These tech centers empower people to acquire skills that help them succeed in today’s digital economy.”
Mayor Sarno added, “Access to the internet and technology is essential in a world reliant on digital communication, education, health, and financial services. The Chestnut Tech Center is a tremendous addition, offering laptops, printers, Wi-Fi, and space for group trainings and childcare support.”
The Resident Tech Center program is already active in multiple HCDI properties, including Liberty Hill Townhouses, Bay Area Community Resource Center, and Elias Brookings Apartments, with more locations planned to expand digital access across the region.
Jennifer Martinez, a resident, stated, “Having a tech center opens doors for everyone. It helps reduce the digital gap and ensures residents have opportunities to fully participate in today’s economy.”
